Today is Fat Thursday or Tłusty Czwartek. Today, you will see Polish shops overflowing with shoppers and happy faces walking out with a doughnut (or ten).
Fat Thursday is a feasting day in the Christian calendar and occurs on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday when Lent begins. Since Lent is a period when excessives are restricted, Fat Thursday is the day when friends and family get together to celebrate the ending of the Carnival, a day dedicated to eating, usually sweet things.
The most common foods traditionally eaten today (other than normal mealtimes) are pączki (doughnuts) with rose petal or plum preserve, and faworki (angel wings).
